Nailsea Speed Croquet Doubles
Winners: Ian Telfer and Rob Royffe
The first club competition of the season for Nailsea & District Croquet Club was the Speed Croquet Doubles where each pair have only 25 minutes on the lawn. There were 16 entrants and they played in two blocks with four pairs in each block.
All the games were exciting as the players, acutely aware of the clock, raced round the lawns, trying to play accurately and make tactical decisions.
In Block A, Kriss Chambers partnered Brian Roynon. Due to his low handicap, Kriss had to do at least one peel in each game but he carried these off with his legendary skill and the pair won all three of their games. Second in the block were Ian Telfer and Rob Royffe, with two wins.
Peter Dyke and Violet Delmas won all their three games to lead Block B, followed by Geoff Hughes and Linda Shaw with two wins.
Kriss and Brian won their semi-final against Geoff and Linda by 5 points but the semi-final between Ian & Rob and Peter & Violet was tied when time was called. The tie-break was the equivalent of a penalty shootout where the players had to attempt to run a hoop from a distance of 3 yards. Ian and Rob both made the hoop to clinch a place in the final.
The Final was closely contested, with some excellent play but this match also went to a tie-break. In a battle of nerves, only Rob could get through the hoop so he secured the trophy for himself and Ian.
The Finalists from Left to Right: Ian Telfer, Rob Royffe, Kriss Chambers and Brian Roynon
