Intermediate League Nailsea (SE) V's Kingston Maurward. Sunday 13 May 2007

On Sunday, 13 May, the wettest day since last August, the Nailsea team travelled to Kingston Maurward. In the morning, the rain started and just got heavier and heavier. Mallets were being used to disperse the water lying on the lawn but conditions became impossible for a while and the Singles players decided to take a break. The Doubles match carried on but the Nailsea pair struggled to make the balls carry for more than a few yards and lost the match. When the rain eased a little, play resumed in the Singles match and Kathy Wallace won +3T after an exciting finish. After a brief rest and change of clothes, Linda Shaw, making her debut in this League, started her Singles match. Linda used her bisques well to gain a head start, then her opponent began to make up the deficit and eventually overtook her. He missed a long peg out and pegged out just one ball. Linda held her nerve, ran all her remaining hoops and gained victory by one point. Meanwhile, Steve Walker also in his first appearance at Intermediate Level had got to rover with one ball, using 4 of his 7 bisques but was finding it much more difficult to get his second ball round. His opponent was playing well and his experience helped him to defeat Steve. This made the score 2-all so a decider had to be played. The sun was now out and the wet clothes were hanging on a tree to dry. Kathy Wallace got off to a fairly good start but then her opponent produced a 9-hoop break. Kathy fought back with her own 9-hoop break and the game was very close for a while but Kathy eventually won +9, bringing a 3-2 victory for Nailsea.
