South West Federation Short Croquet Competition

The South West Federation held its annual Short Croquet Team Competition on Easter Sunday, 8 April. Six teams of four players took part in two divisions with four teams in the top division. Nailsea fielded two teams, Nailsea (all men) and Trendlewood (all women), and they competed against Cornwall and Dyffryn in the first division. In the first round Trendlewood beat Cornwall 3-1 and Nailsea drew with Dyffryn 2-2. In the next two rounds the scores were 2-all in every match, so Trendlewood kept their one game lead over Nailsea and Dyffryn, with Cornwall trailing by one game. In the fourth round the top two teams played each other a second time with different pairings of players and the third and fourth teams played each other. As Nailsea and Dyffryn were equal second they had a shoot-out at the peg, which Nailsea won 2-1 from four shots at the peg. In the final round Trendlewood drew with Nailsea and Dyffyn drew with Cornwall 2-all in both matches. So Trendlewood managed to hang on to their one game lead with a total of 9 wins, Nailsea and Dyffryn both finished with 8 wins. Cornwall , who could not catch up, ended with 7 wins and will be relegated to the second division next season. Most of the games in this division were closely fought and the winning margin was just a single point in nine of the 32 games. Only five of the games were completed with a peg-out.

In the second division Fowey overwhelmed Barnstaple with a 16-nil win and completed seven games with a peg-out. Fowey will be promoted to the first division next year.
