The Club has just completed an extremely successful season. Last year they were successful in obtaining a lottery grant and built a pavilion, which was formally opened by Dr LIAM FOX, MP, at the beginning of this season. An Open Day attracted fifty visitors and the Club held six Beginners Classes and recruited over forty new members. The Club has also had its most successful season ever in the South West Federation Leagues, winning both the Intermediate and 'B' Leagues. They came third in the Advanced League and won the Central Section of the Federation League, but lost to Dyffryn, winners of the Northern Section, in the semi-finals giving the Club third place overall. Amongst individual successes ALEX LEGGATE came fourth in the Spencer-Ell Competition, the third of four Croquet Association Invitation Events. ROGER BROOKS, whose handicap came down from 16 to 4.5 during the season, won South West Area Final of the All England Handicap. Meanwhile sixteen year old KRISS CHAMBERS became the first person ever to win the National Junior Championship for the third successive year. He was also captain of the National Junior (U21) Squad which beat the National Senior Squad, composed of top ranking British players, and was captain the Nailsea School team which won both the National Schools Level Play and Handicap Championships. Most impressive of all KRISS came 22nd in the World Golf Croquet Championships. Sixteen year old JAMES DIXON was also a member of the National Junior Squad and he and fourteen year old MARCUS EVANS were members of the successful Nailsea School team which beat sixth formers from Wolverhampton Grammar School in the finals of the National Schools Championships. |
