Saturday 25th October 1998 - Nailsea Club Level Play Competition
The Club's Level Play Competition for players with handicaps from 5 to 15 was completed. There were four competitors all of whom played each other. ROGER BROOKS had already played and won all three of his games, so the remaining competitors were playing for second place.
In the morning PETER DYKE was on excellent form and completed twelve hoops with both balls before IAN WILSON scored a single point, but then he missed the peg and pegged out just one ball. IAN scored two points before PETER hit in and pegged out his second ball.
In the afternoon PETER had a much tougher game against DAVID MURPHY, who has made excellent progress this season. Honours were fairly even for most of the game, with DAVID just having the edge. Then he made a break to take a seven point lead. PETER replied with a five hoop break. DAVID took one ball to the peg. PETER took his backward ball to the peg and pegged out DAVID's forward ball. He then sent DAVID's other ball to one end of the court and laid up at the other end. With only one ball to aim at DAVID made a superb across court hit-in, ran the last hoop and pegged out to win by three points.
| 1. ROGER BROOKS 3 wins +75 points (+26, +25, +24) | 2. DAVID MURPHY 2 wins -11 points (-25, +3, +11) |
| 3. PETER DYKE 1 win -5 points (-26, -3, +24) | 4. IAN WILSON 0 wins -59 points (-24, -24, -11) |
Sat & Sun 17th & 18th October 1998 - Nailsea Club Finals Weekend (2)
The Club's last three Finals of their summer season were played over this weekend. The competitors enjoyed much better weather than those who were available to play at Finals Weekend in September.
ROGER BROOKS drove down from Lancaster, where he has recently taken up a new appointment, to play the final of the Handicap Singles. The trip was worth his while because in the best of three final he beat DAVID MURPHY by two games to nil. In the first game DAVID used his handicap advantage to build up an eight point lead before breaking down by hoop one. ROGER replied with an eleven-hoop break. DAVID managed to score two more points before ROGER took his second ball round, finishing with a rover peel and pegging out to win by sixteen points.
In the second game ROGER laid a short tice which DAVID hit and made a two-hoop two-ball break before joining his partner ball on the east boundary. ROGER shot and missed and DAVID scored four points with his second ball before breaking down. ROGER made an eight-hoop break with one ball followed by a seven-hoop break with the other. He then took his forward ball to rover and left DAVID wired on 2-back, but miss-hit the shot when attempting to return to his partner ball. DAVID made a seven-hoop break taking his forward ball to rover and made three more points with his backward ball before ROGER hit a long hit-in and took his second ball to the peg and laid up by rover. DAVID had a long shot which he missed. ROGER scored rover, but failed to get a rush to the peg. He missed a long peg out and pegged out one ball leaving the other by the peg. DAVID missed another long shot and ROGER pegged out to win the Championship.
The Handicap Singles was over by 1.30 pm on the Saturday and ROGER managed to fit in four friendly games over the weekend. He won two Advanced games against KRISS CHAMBERS and a friendly handicap game against a weaker player, but he and KRISS lost a very friendly handicap game against 13 year old MARCUS EVANS, MARCUS winning by a single point with a tremendous jump shot to avoid hitting his opponents' second ball onto the peg.
ROGER, who joined the Nailsea Club last year, has had a tremendous season and his handicap has come down from 16 to 4.5. Earlier in the season he won the Area Final of the All-England Handicap. During the Nailsea Club's Finals Weekend he took part in the Finals of this Championship with thirteen other qualifiers at Wrest Park in Bedfordshire. There was only one qualifier with a lower handicap. ROGER won his first game, but lost the next two. Unfortunately, the second day was a washout and, apart from the two players on three wins, the competitors were sent home. The Club will miss ROGER but wish him every success for the future.
One-ball - BERNARD WILSON won the hotly contested one-ball competition. In the best of three games he beat JOHN JEFFREY by a single point in each of the first two games.
The High Bisquers Competition between MARY BARNES and 15 year old ANDREW LOWDON was also very close, but during the last hour of the game MARY slowly pulled away and built up a seven point lead. With time rapidly approaching ANDREW showed his potential setting up and making a five-hoop break, but he failed to get in front of his next hoop. MARY scored two more points to win by four on time.
(Note: Handicaps in brackets.)
| Open Handicap Singles | ROGER BROOKS (4.5) beat DAVID MURPHY (8) +16, +10. |
| One-Ball | BERNARD WILSON (16) beat JOHN JEFFREY (2.5) +1, +1. |

Week of 4th - 11th October 1998
3rd World Golf Croquet Championships at Royal Leamington Spa
Congratulations to KRISS CHAMBERS who finished 22nd.
KRISS came third out of fourteen British Entries, behind ANDREW HUTCHINSON (Ripon, 16th) and RICHARD BRAND (High Wycombe, 20th).
KRISS is very grateful to everyone who sponsored him, including, many club members, Austin-Reed who provided him with a blazer and Nailsea Community Trust who donated £150.
He would like to improve on his performance by entering the Championship again next year.
Next year the Championship will take place either in the USA or South Africa.
If any business or individual would like to sponsor him in 1999, please contact the Club's Tournament Secretary & Coach PETER DYKE on (01275) 854804.
JOHN JEFFREY, the Club's President, managed to come 40th in the Championships despite being Manager of the tournament. Well done JJ !
Kriss started the Championship in superb form with commanding wins in his block over Australian, TONY HALL, Golf Croquet Champion of New South Wales and RANA AL-ALAMI (Palestine). This was followed by one the best games of the Championship when he beat YASSER ESMAT, current Egyptian Men's Champion, by a single point. On the third day KRISS suffered his only defeat in the Block, losing to South African, GRAHAME TOMES, Western Province Golf Croquet Champion, before beating ROD WILLIAMS (Scotland) to finish second in his Block, behind the Egyptian (both had four wins, but YASSER had two more points).
KRISS therefore qualified for the knockout competition for the top 32 places. In the first round of the knockout he met SALIB ERYAN, another Egyptian. KRISS won the first game in the best of three, but lost the next two.
Out of the top sixteen, he was now fighting for a place from 17 to 32. He gained a walkover in the next round because his opponent, SHERINE HANDY, withdrew following medical advice. The long break did him no good - he finished his last game against SALIB at 8.30 Wednesday morning and did not play again until 5 on Thursday afternoon - and he lost to his next opponent, MARK McINERNEY (Ireland) in two straight games.
At this stage of the Championship, matches between competitors not contesting the top 16 places were reduced to single games because they were running so far behind schedule. KRISS won his next game against GRAHAME TOMES, the only person to have beaten him in the block, but lost his final game to ANDREA PRAVETTONI (Italy) to finish 22nd.
During the Championships KRISS, who is studying for his National Diploma in computer studies at Weston College, assisted the manager of the tournament. Unfortunately the manger was having a lot of problems to sort out and they were not getting back to their lodgings until late at night. They also had to be ready to start at 8 o'clock in the morning and, unlike other competitors, KRISS was unable to have a lie-in if he was not competing until late. He started the Championship in superb form but clearly became more tired as the week went on.
The Egyptians have dominated this Championship since it was started three years ago took six of the top ten places. The winner was KHALED YOUNIS (Egypt), who beat MIK MEHAS (USA) in the Final. YASSER ESMAT, the Egyptian KRISS beat in his block came fourth overall.
Block:-
KRISS CHAMBERS beat TONY HALL (Australia) +5, RANA AL-ALAMI (Palestine) +5,
YASSER ESMAT (Egypt) +1, lost to GRAHAME TOMES (South Africa) -1 and beat ROD
WILLIAMS (Scotland) +2 to finsh second to YASSER on points in the block.
Championship (top 32 places):-

HAMDY (Egypt) +7,+7, lost to MARK McINERNY (Ireland) -4,-4, beat GRAHAME TOMES

SWF Federation League Semi-Final (played at Bristol)
Nailsea 2 Dyffryn 3
Nailsea had the choice of match format and PETER DYKE, the Nailsea captain, went for the unusual format of three doubles and two singles. . The tactic might have paid off but for a costly mistake he made in his morning doubles. Giving away seven bisques, four went cheaply early in the game. PETER then set up a break and missed a short roquet leaving the break for the opponents. The weaker opponent scored six points before breaking down. KRISS CHAMBERS missed a long roquet and the stronger opponent finished the game. Meanwhile JAMES DIXON and IAN WILSON won their doubles.
In afternoon doubles the weaker opponent used their bisques to score ten points. KRISS took his ball to the peg peeling his opponent through the last two hoops and pegging him out. Then followed cat and mouse tactics with IAN scoring a hoop at a time until the stronger opponent hit in and made a 3-ball break before breaking down at penultimate. IAN scored three hoops with a 2-ball break. The opponent ran penult before IAN ran the last three hoops and pegged out to win the game by just two points. Nailsea lost both singles games.
This is the end of an excellent run this season by the Club in the Federation League, but the club has reached the finals in both the Intermediate and B-leagues.

Nailsea started well winning three games in the first round with wins by PETER DYKE, DAVID MURPHY and BERNARD WILSON. Pendle won two games and Leicester won one. This was repeated in the second round. In the third round the scoreline was the same with IAN WILSON gaining a win instead of BERNARD.

score nine hoops. Alex Leggate replied with a 12-hoop break peeling his opponent
through the last two hoops, but was unable to peg her out. Jane used two more

Sat 16th May 1998 South West Federation (SWF) 'B' League (at Wellington)
Nailsea 4 Wellington 1
The first game for the Nailsea B League team this season was played at Wellington Croquet Club. The day was perfect - warm and sunny - and the setting was idyllic. The club is situated in the grounds of a wonderful old house, now a residential home for elderly people. The grounds are spacious and there are many splendid mature trees and shrubs and a very well kept knot garden, which, along with birdsong and a very persistent cuckoo, provided the perfect, very English backdrop for the croquet lawns. Only one small slightly bumpy lawn was usable due to heavy storms prior to the match.
In the doubles Wellington stated well with a six-hoop break. GRETA STRINGER and MARY BARNES had a slow start, but soon got used to the 'foreign' lawns. It was a fairly even game, but MARY and GRETA just managed to win by two points on time.
At the same time JOY WILYMAN won her singles game by five points on time.
After lunch MARY hit some spectacular long shots and made some very good hoops. Her opponent doggedly and persistently ran one hoop at a time and, after a very even battle in the hot sunshine, won by a single point on time.
In another nail-biting game JOY and her second opponent were 11-all at the end of two hours play. They fought hard for another thirty minutes, splitting up each others balls and returning to 'mother' time and time again until JOY, who had gradually been inching her way closer to a hoop, managed to run the hoop, both players finishing exhausted in the warm sunshine.
Nailsea were 3-1 up and at this point, a wonderful, much appreciated tea was served, which we all thoroughly enjoyed !
In the final game GRETA's singles opponent started well running her first hoop. GRETA then set up a 4-ball break and made seven hoops before breaking down. Her opponent came back and skilfully took her second ball to the peg. GRETA then managed to get another break, scoring six points with her second ball. Her adversary failed to score, GRETA took one ball to the peg and, after a bit of splitting up, ran the last hoop and pegged out to win by nine points.
This was an excellent start to the season by the Nailsea team. Wellington were winners of their section of the B League last year.

Friday 8th May 1998 New Pavilion Opening
The official opening of Nailsea & District Croquet Club's new pavilion by Dr Liam Fox MP was followed by an exhibition match between KRISS CHAMBERS & JAMES DIXON and two former British Test Team players, Professor BERNARD NEAL & Dr MARTIN MURRAY. With around sixty spectators all four players felt the pressure, but the two youngsters coped with the stress better than their older and more experienced opponents. JAMES opened the scoring with a seven-hoop break. MARTIN replied scoring eight hoops. JAMES scored a further two points, and KRISS attempted a triple-peel. He made a twelve-hoop break and one peel. BERNARD finally got going and scored six points before JAMES completed his last two hoops and pegged out to win by twelve points.
