NDCC May Handicap Tournament (CA event)
Over the weekend KRISS CHAMBERS won The Amelia Hall Plate at Nailsea Croquet Club's May Handicap Tournament for the second successive year. The event attracted sixteen players - two from Stroud, four from Bath, two from Bristol, one from Taunton, one from Cardiff and six from the host club.
With a handicap of -1.5 KRISS had the lowest handicap of the field and, having to give every opponent extra turns, he was not really expected to win. He started with a very close game which he won by two points, but he won his remaining games quite comfortably. Other Nailsea players who played well were PAT LONG and NICK CARTER. PAT started well with three good wins on Saturday and one on Sunday to reach the final against KRISS. Unfortunately she was overawed by the occasion - her first final in a Croquet Association (CA) fixture - and was unable to maintain the superb form she had shown throughout the weekend. Nick, a beginner last year, was knocked out of the main event in the first round and went into a consolation event. He won his next three games, but lost a very close final by two points.
NICK and PAT both gained CA bronze awards for completing 10 hoop-breaks with bisques and JAMES DIXON completed a triple peel on one of his opponents. PAT also gained a handicap reduction from 16 to 14.
