Nailsea & District Croquet Club Finals Weekend

A record twenty-one competitors took part in the semi-finals and finals at Nailsea & District Croquet Club’s Finals Weekend. The weather was bad on Saturday and in the evening heavy rain flooded the lawns and one game had to be pegged down overnight and completed the following day. At this stage the organiser was concerned that it would not be possible to complete the finals over the weekend. However the weather cleared up on Sunday and all competitions in a very full weekend program were completed with the exception of the Ladies Singles and the Advanced Play Competition.

KRISS CHAMBERS and BERYL GRIFFITHS won the Golf Croquet Doubles for the second successive year. They beat DAVID MURPHY & KATHY WALLACE by a single point in a very closely contested game. KRISS scored the winning shot from the boundary line - a seven yard shot, hitting an opponent’s ball out of the way and rebounding through the deciding hoop. KRISS also won the Golf Croquet Singles and the One Ball Level Play, beating PETER DYKE in both finals. However he was beaten in the final of the One Ball Handicap Competition by ARTHUR GREEN. ARTHUR also won the High Bisquers Competition.

The final of the Short Croquet Competition was contested by two junior members of the club, MARCUS EVANS and ANDREW LOWDON. MARCUS was the victor and he also beat ANDREW in the final of the Junior Level Play Competition.

In the Level Play (hcp 5-15) final DAVID MURPHY came back from being sixteen points down to beat PETER DYKE by four points. GEOFF HUGHES won the Level Play (hcp 16-28) beating BOB SERGEANT in the final.

In the Open Doubles semi-final ADRIENNE GRIFFITHS and BRIGIT CLAYTON just managed to hang on to the lead to beat PETER DYKE and MARY BARNES by a single point, but they were no match for BERNARD WILSON and VIOLET DELMAS in the final.

In the Over 50s Competition JOHN WALLACE, one of last year’s beginners, had convincing wins in both the semi-final and the final, but in the Open Singles he had a much closer contest, beating GEOFF HUGHES by six points.

However, the biggest surprise of the weekend occurred in a game in the Advanced Play Block. ALEX LEGGATE, ranked 35th in the British rankings, was beaten by PETER DYKE, an unranked player.
