South West Federation Golf Croquet Championships
On Sunday the Finals of the South West Federation 1999 Golf Croquet Championships were played at Nailsea. These Finals had been postponed from last September because the lawns were flooded and the organisers were worried that they may have to be cancelled altogether following last weeks bad weather. However the lawns were playable despite steady rain Sunday morning.
Twenty-four players from all over the South West took part and 26 doubles and 71 singles (a total of 97 games) were played on the day. Manager PETER DYKE set a strict time limit of 25 minutes. He was amazed that nearly two-thirds of the games were completed within the time limit and the final game finished at 6.25 pm, an hour ahead of schedule.
The Nailsea pair, 18 year olds KRISS CHAMBERS and J. DIXON, were favourites for the doubles and were undefeated in their block. In the other block PETER DYKE and MARCUS EVANS lost their first game by a single point and went on to win the rest of the games in their block. However it was not enough the Plymouth pair, who had beaten them in the first game, went on to win all their games and the block. CHAMBERS and DIXON won the final quite convincingly.
KRISS CHAMBERS was also favourite to win the low handicap singles. He won his first two games but lost his third game to MARIAN HILTON (Bristol). In the meantime, SYD WAKEHAM (Plymouth) was undefeated. The Manager switched the order of the last two rounds so that CHAMBERS met WAKEHAM in the final round. Whoever won this game won the Championship. CHAMBERS was a convincing victor by five points.
KATH BURT (W.I.) won the high handicap singles, beating DAVID PERKINS (Lansdown) by four points in the final.
