Nailsea Croquet Club’s Weekend Advanced Play Tournament

Players travelled from as far as Pendle, Southport and Hertfordshire for Nailsea Croquet Club’s Annual Weekend Advanced Play Tournament and the handicaps of the players ranged from minus 1½ to plus 5. However it was the local players who set the early lead with an 18 year old Nailsea player winning three games before lunch on Saturday. His third victim was pre-tournament favourite, DON GAUNT (hcp –1½, Stroud), whom he beat with a straight triple, having already won his second game with a triple peel. GAUNT was having a bad day, having struggled for three hours to win his first game by four on time against a much lower ranked opponent. The young Nailsea player then took a long break before returning in the evening to play ROGER JENKINS (-1, Bristol) who, by this time, had caught up with him. This game between the two tournament leaders was rather scrappy, with both players missing chances, but JENKINS eventually won the game and was the overnight leader. Another on form local player was ALEX LEGGATE (-1, Nailsea) who played five games on Saturday, winning four of them - three with triple peels, including one against GAUNT. His only loss of the day was against JENKINS and he finished the day in second place.

On Sunday LEGGATE continued his winning form with two more victories, whereas JENKINS lost to third place player DAVID LILLY (Hertfordshire, formally Nailsea). In the meantime GAUNT was recovering from his poor form the previous day, with three wins including one against LILLY. LEGGATE just needed to win his final game, but he too fell victim to LILLY and JENKINS secured victory against GAUNT to win the tournament. The standard of play was very high with seven triple peels on Saturday, but only one on Sunday.

Results

  1. ROGER JENKINS, 6 wins out of 7, final rating 68.
  2. DAVID LILLY, 5 wins out of 6, final rating 64.
  3. ALEX LEGGATE, 6 wins out of 8, final rating 62.
  4. DON GAUNT, 5 wins out of 8, final rating 58.
