Federation League Match

Kingston Maurward 3 Nailsea 2

On Sunday Nailsea’s Federation League team travelled to Kingston Maurward, near Dorchester, for their third game of the season. Kingston Maurward is a small club with only 29 members, but it is undefeated in the league so far this season. They have only one lawn, slightly undersize, very fast with tricky boundaries. Even the home team found the conditions very difficult, so the Nailsea team had their work cut out.

In the morning doubles NICK CARTER used Nailsea’s handicap advantage to build up a seven-point lead. The Nailsea pair managed to keep the initiative and extended their lead. Both of the Kingston Maurward pair were having problem’s scoring hoop one, but eventually the better player, playing off scratch, made a break. He peeled his partner’s ball through the first hoop, but this was a mistake because he then broke down, letting PETER DYKE in. The Nailsea pair managed to keep the initiative and won the game by five points on time. In the singles MARCUS EVANS used his handicap advantage to build up a useful lead, but his opponent, IAN GARFIELD, a former Nailsea member, was on good form and managed to beat MARCUS by two points on time. This is MARCUS’s first defeat of the season in a competitive game.

In the afternoon MARCUS always had the upper hand in his game and won by eleven points. NICK squandered his enormous handicap advantage against the scratch player, but he gained a seven-hoop lead. His opponent was struggling to get started and NICK started playing well and kept the initiative for a while, but eventually he was overhauled and lost by seven points. In the deciding game PETER had two good chances against IAN, but he failed to capitalize on them and IAN, who played well throughout the day won by 23 points.

Results:

PETER DYKE & NICK CARTER won +5ot

MARCUS EVANS lost –2ot & won +11

NICK CARTER lost –7 PETER DYKE lost –23
