SWF Federation & Intermediate leagues & NDCC Speed Croquet


Federation League: Bristol 3 Nailsea 4

On Saturday Nailsea Croquet Club were involved in two league games. Their Federation League team played at Bristol, where they beat the home team by four games to three. In the morning ALEX LEGGATE and KRISS CHAMBERS had a good win in the doubles by 18 points. PETER DYKE’s opponent got off to a good start using one bisque to take a ball to rover, but he was unable to get going with his second ball and a mistake let PETER into the game. PETER took full advantage making a seven-hoop break and went on to win the game by 13 points. DAVID MURPHY’s lost by 17 points.

In the afternoon ALEX had just one chance in his game and lost by 22 points. KRISS, giving eight bisques to his opponent, had an excellent win by 4 points.

DAVID had a good win by 14 points. In the battle of the captains PETER DYKE got off to a terrible start, but recovered well, and after a ding-dong battle the Bristol captain won by a single point.

This is the Nailsea Club’s final Federation League match of the season and the team finishes in the middle of the league table.


Intermediate League: Nailsea 3 Lansdown 2

In the morning Nailsea lost the doubles, but Geoff Hughes won his singles game. In the afternoon GEOFF had another singles win and a handicap reduction to 14. GRETA STRINGER won her singles, but Nailsea lost the other singles game. Nailsea have won all their Intermediate League games this season and go through to the play-offs for the title.


Nailsea Croquet Club’s Speed Croquet Competition

Nailsea Croquet Club held its annual Speed Croquet Competition on Sunday. Twelve competitors entered this doubles competition and partners were drawn at random with low handicap players partnering high handicap players.

After three rounds PAT LONG and JOHN LUMLEY were the clear leaders with three wins and GRETA STRINGER and JOHN PATERSON were in second position two wins. At this stage all other pairs each had a single win. In the final two rounds PAT and JOHN lost both games, whereas GRETA and JOHN won both games to win the competition. Meanwhile PETER DYKE and VIOLET DELMAS had a late surge with two good wins to take second place.
