Nailsea & District Croquet Club August Weekend Handicap Tournament
Nailsea Croquet Club had 17 entries for their August Weekend Handicap Tournament. Visitors came from Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Wellington, Plymouth and even Ramsgate. The tournament was run as an Egyptian, a format which allows players can choose to play as many or as few games as they wish and a 3¼ hour time limit was set for all games. Everyone was experiencing difficulties running the freshly set hoops and five out of the eight games in the first round went to time. Even the quickest game to finish took 3 hours to complete.
ROY HAWKINS, returning to Nailsea and playing his first competitive games for seven years, won both his games on Saturday by one on time. ANDREW LOWDON and PAT LONG (both Nailsea) and WENDY ROSSER (Wellington) also won two games with ANDREW having his handicap cut from 18 to 16 in the middle of his second game. Only four competitors managed to complete three games on Saturday and the manager had to abandon his ruling that the winner had to play a minimum of five games over the weekend.
Before play on Sunday Referee of the Tournament, HAMISH HALL, checked the hoops and declared that none were too narrow and four or five were too wide. In the morning ROY beat ANDREW by eight and PAT beat WENDY by two in another game that went to time. ANDREW made amends by winning his next game by a maximum 26 points in record time, taking only an hour to complete the game and had time for a third game which he won by 18, this time taking two hours. However, it was not enough to beat ROY, who beat PAT to finish with a rating of 66 six ahead of ANDREW. GRETA STRINGER (Nailsea) finished a game which had been pegged down over night to finish in third place with a rating of 59 points. PAT, GRETA and WENDY all had handicap reductions at the end of the tournament.
