Federation League: Nailsea 1 East Dorset 4

Intermediate League: Nailsea 1 Plymouth 6

Two of Nailsea Croquet Club’s League teams played away on Sunday and both lost. In the Federation League PETER DYKE and GEOFF HUGHES established a good lead in the doubles, but good play by the opponents saw the Nailsea pair trailing by seven points with ten minutes left to play. GEOFF managed to score three more points, but PETER needed to hit a 30-yard roquet and score four points in the last turn to draw level, but he missed the roquet. In a very quick singles game, GRETA STRINGER lost by 14 points.

In the afternoon GRETA had a good win by nine points against the East Dorset captain. GEOFF established a good lead, but his opponent played well and overtook GEOFF to win by four points. PETER just could not get going and was stuck on hoop one for nearly two hours, while his opponent took both balls around to hoop five, where he got stuck. Eventually PETER got going and managed to establish a one-point lead. Meanwhile his opponent got changed. When he came back he played two faultless turns to establish a 13-point lead. PETER fought back, but was unable to get back on terms and lost by 11 points.

In the ‘B’ League match, KATHY WALLACE had a good singles win by 11 points in the morning, but RICHARD DELMAS narrowly lost his singles and Nailsea lost the doubles to trail 1-2 at lunch. In the afternoon VIOLET DELMAS had a narrow defeat by only three points, but Nailsea lost the other three games to the team that has been league champions for the past two seasons.
