Nailsea & District Croquet Club Golf Croquet Competitions
Over the weekend Nailsea & District Croquet Club held the preliminary round of their Golf Croquet Competitions. On Saturday morning there were 13 entrants for the Level Play Singles, so the event was arranged in two blocks of four and one of five. Each competitor played everyone else in their block. The winner of block A was PETER DYKE with three wins out of three and ARTHUR GREEN was runner up with two wins. MARCUS EVANS won Block B (four wins out of four) and DAVID MURPHY won Block C on points (two wins out of three, +4 points). The respective runners up were SHEILA WARE with three wins and MARY BARNES two wins, +2 points. The three winners go forward to the semi-finals and there will be a play-off between the runners up for the fourth semi-final place.
There were 14 competitors, including two junior members, for the Handicap Singles event in the afternoon. The same format was used as in the morning, but with one block of four and two Blocks of five. The block winners were SANDRA PATERSON, 3 wins/3 games, DAVID MURPHY, 4/4, and MARCUS EVANS, 3/4. MARCUS's only defeat of the day was by 11-year old THOMAS ROYLANCE, who beat him by a single point. The three runners up, who will contest the fourth semi-final place, were PETER DYKE, 2/3, MARY BARNES, 3/4, and SHEILA WARE, 3/4.
On Sunday afternoon six pairs contested the handicap doubles competition, with low handicap players partnering high handicap players. In this competition each pair played each of the other pairs. Two of this year's beginners, MALCOLM and CHRISTINE JAGO, who have had only two croquet lessons, joined in the competition and played extremely well, coached by their partners. The winners were MARCUS EVANS and MALCOLM JAGO, with five wins/five and the runners up were ADRIENNE GRIFFITHS and CHRISTINE JAGO with three wins/four, their final opponents having to leave before the end of the competition. PETER DYKE and BERYL GRIFFITHS finished in third place with three wins/five.
