Nailsea Croquet Club's Weekend Advanced Play Tournament
This year the entry was low with only six players, including a very late entry received Friday evening and the Manager of the Tournament who entered to ensure an even number of entrants. Unfortunately some of the Nailsea clubs own top players were unavailable because they are at university or studying for examinations at the moment. However competitors travelled from Ramsgate and Colchester as well as local ones from Bristol, Bath and Nailsea. The competition was run as a single block with everyone playing each other once. The manager ensured that the two most successful players did not meet until the final round and they played a best of three final.
The late entrant, DAVID RUSCOMBE-KING from Bath Croquet Club, caused an upset in the first round by beating the defending champion and lowest handicap player. He went on to win his next three games to gain a place in the final. The other on form player was PAUL HARBORD, a scratch player from Colchester, who also won his first four games. PAUL won the best of three final by two games to nil. In the first of these two games, he kept the other competitors entertained with an attempt at his maiden triple peel. He successfully completed the three peels, but failed to get position in front of rover with the ball he was playing.
Last years winner, ROGER JENKINS from Bristol, finished in third place with three wins, while Nailseas only competitor, PETER DYKE, came fifth with one win.
