Roehampton 1 The Croquet Association 11

MARCUS EVANS from Nailsea, winner of last year’s All England Handicap Tournament, was selected to play for the Croquet Association (C.A.) against Roehampton Croquet Club on Saturday as part of the Roehampton Club’s centenary celebrations.

In the match MARCUS played two handicap singles games and won them both to help the C.A. team to an 11-1 victory. MARCUS, playing off a handicap of 6, was the player with the highest handicap representing the C.A.

He also played two 14-point advanced play games and won them both against players with handicaps of 4½ and 4. Finally he played two one-ball games, winning one of them.

MARCUS reported that the Roehampton lawns were so good it was like playing on a carpet. The visitors were also treated to an excellent lunch and tea prepared by members of the Roehampton Club.

Matches at Nailsea Postponed

With half the entrants unavailable to play on Saturday in the first round of this year’s All England Handicap, it was decided to postpone the event to a later date.

On Sunday, Nailsea’s opponents, Kingston Maurward, were unable to raise a team in the Federation League. The two team captains are trying to rearrange the match for a mid-week date in August.

Early exit for Peter

With the postponement of fixtures over the weekend, Nailsea’s Tournament Secretary and Coach, PETER DYKE, decided to play some of the Club Competitions instead. He was beaten by GEOFF HUGHES by 21 points in the first round of the Club’s Open Handicap Singles, and as he had already been beaten by PAT LONG in the other half of this two life knockout event he became the first player to lose both lives. GEOFF gained an automatic handicap reduction from 12 to 11 as a result of this win.

PETER made up for this defeat by beating GRETA STRINGER by nine points in the Club’s Over 50s Competition on Saturday afternoon.
