SWF Short Croquet & CA v Ireland

SWF Short Croquet Team Event

Wellington 6  Dyffryn 8  Nailsea 10

On Saturday the South West Federation Short Croquet Team Event took place at Nailsea Croquet Club. The match was a triangular event between Dyffryn, last year’s winners, Nailsea, winners of last year’s National Short Croquet Team Event, and Wellington.

The host club started well, with wins by KRISS CHAMBERS, PETER DYKE and NICK CARTER while Dyffryn won two games and Wellington won one. In the second round PETER was pegged out by JAMES MACKAY (Dyffryn), but he did a brilliant three-ball break to the peg only to miss the final roquet he needed to peg out. JAMES finished in the next turn enabling Dyffryn to catch up with Nailsea, each having won five games while Wellington moved up to two wins. In the third round two Wellington players defeated Dyffryn opponents, and KRISS missed a peg-out to became the second Nailsea player to lose to JAMES by a single point, but the other three Nailsea players (PETER, NICK and PAT LONG) all won their games to take Nailsea back into the lead – Nailsea 8, Dyffryn 6, Wellington 4. At this stage three players, one from each team, had won all three games and two of them were due to play each other in the final round. NICK CARTER beat his Wellington opponent after she missed a roquet having scored her final hoop and the Dyffryn captain lost to a Wellington player, so NICK was the only player to win all four games. In the final round each team recorded two wins taking the final tally to Wellington 6, Dyffryn 8, Nailsea 10.

CA versus Ireland

CA 5  Ireland 4

MARCUS EVANS (handicap 4½) from Nailsea Croquet Club was selected to play for the CA against Ireland at Cheltenham over the weekend. In the doubles he was partnered by Andrew Cowing (0) and they won +3, +17STP , with Marcus successfully completing a straight triple peel in the second game helping England to a 2-1 lead overnight. In the best of three singles against ANDREW JOHNSON (1½) on Sunday he won his first game +18, but lost the next two –14 and –21. This was a very good result and excellent experience for the 16 year-old from Nailsea. In the singles the two teams drew 3-all giving an overall result of CA 5, Ireland 4.
