17 October 2001
End of 2001 Season Newsletter from Tournament Secretary - Peter's Page !
Team Results:
In the National Short Croquet Final we came 2nd out of the 5 competing teams. In the Parkstone Trophy Qualifier (Advanced League) we came 3rd out of 4 teams in our section, Federation League 4th/5 teams and 'B' League 3rd/6 teams. We won our section in the Intermediate League, but lost to Dyffryn in the semi-finals. These results are not as good as in the last two years; hopefully we will do better next year.
Individual Successes:
Ian Wilson won our August Tournament. Marcus Evans won the Golf Croquet All England Handicap, our May Handicap Tournament and several trophies at Budleigh Salterton including 'Most Improved Player', 'Highest Handicap Player to do a Triple Peel with bisques' - it was actually a Quadruple Peel using only two bisques - and 'the Fastest Person to Finish a Game'. He was also selected by the CA to play against Ireland and completed a straight triple in the doubles, and also completed a standard triple in a Parkstone Trophy match against Sidmouth. Peter Dyke won the Handicap One-ball Competition at Budleigh and qualified for the All England Handicap Finals where he won 3 games out of 6.
Club Competitions:
See Finals Weekend report for Results of Club Competition. Trophies will be engraved and hopefully will be ready for collection by 7 November. I will also try to produce certificates for the winners and runners-up.
Handicap Changes:
Several players handicaps have improved during the season either on the card or by the handicap committee: Mary Barnes 18 > 16, Nick Carter 16 > 14, Peter Dyke 8 > 6, Arthur Green 20 > 18, Adrienne Griffiths 16 > 14, Marcus Evans 7 > 2, Tom Hart 28 > 24, Geoff Hughes 12 > 11, Pat Long 10 > 8, David Stafford 28 > 24, Greta Stringer 11 > 8, John Wallace 13 > 11, Sheila Ware 24 > 22, Bernard Wilson 14 > 12 and Matthew Zinn 28 > 24.
The handicap committee has met since the end of the season and made the following additional reductions: Mary Barnes 16 > 15, Brigit Clayton 24 > 22, Richard Delmas 20 > 18, Violet Delmas 24 > 22, Harry Wallace 28 > 24, John Wallace 11 > 7 and Kathy Wallace 22 > 20.
Changes in golf croquet handicaps:
Peter Dyke 1 > 0, Marcus Evans 0 > 1.
All members are required to keep a handicap card, and those with handicaps of 16 or more should keep their record of all games played including friendlies up to date in the results book in the pavilion.
Most improved player:
Marcus is the most improved player this year and John Wallace is runner-up. Deciding on the most improved female player was much more difficult. There were several good contenders, but I have decided to award it to Kathy with Greta as runner-up.
100 Club Draw:
The prizewinners are Brigit Clayton (£35), Mary Barnes (£20) and Roy Dyer (£15). This year members have bought 24 units, so there is plenty of room for more members. If you wish to join the subscription for the rest of the year is £6 per unit (maximum two units). Please contact Peter Dyke for further information and application forms. The next draw will be at the Christmas Dinner.
Volunteers:
Thanks to Hamish and Gwyn for coaching beginners, to Marcus and Mary for helping me with the juniors, to Arthur for marking the white lines, to John Paterson, Marcus and Richard for helping to set up lawns before Competitions and Tournaments and to everyone for helping to put the equipment away afterwards and to Kathy and Marcus for helping me to run Club Competitions. I need a replacement for John next year - volunteers please.
Winter Table Tennis Competition:
Please sign the list in the pavilion or ring me on 01275 545 178 by 9 November
if you wish to enter the above competition.
