SWF Federation League - Bristol  4   Nailsea  3

On Sunday Nailsea Croquet Club's Federation League team was narrowly beaten by Bristol in their second match of the season. MARCUS EVANS and MARY BARNES had a good win in the doubles. MARCUS peeled his partner's ball through the last five hoops and pegged out both balls, only to find that the last peel and peg out did not count as you are allowed only four peels on your partner's ball in handicap doubles. However he was let off lightly when the Bristol captain missed a short roquet and MARY was able to run the last hoop and peg out to secure a win. GRETA STRINGER also had a good win, but PETER DYKE scored only one hoop in his singles game. So at lunch, Nailsea led by two games to one.

In the afternoon, MARCUS had an excellent win, beating the Bristol captain by 26 with a triple peel. GRETA STRINGER and MARY BARNES were both defeated, so the outcome of the match depended on the last game to finish. PETER DYKE built up a commanding lead, but having run the penultimate hoop he missed a short roquet. This let his opponent in and she went round to the peg and pegged out his forward ball. He had a few long shots, but failed to hit in and his opponent was able to score the last three hoops with her second ball and peg out to win the game by two points and secure victory for Bristol.

Further comments:

In the doubles Marcus Evans did five peels on his partner's ball and "pegged out" both balls at which point it was pointed out by his opponents and myself that he was allowed to do only four peels on his partner's ball and so the last one did not count. He used four bisques to accomplish this, but he had achieved only 3 hoops and 1 peel when he used the last bisque. At the end of this turn all four balls were left together in the middle of the lawn, but Roger Jenkins let him off the hook by missing a short roquet!

The outcome of the match depended on the result of the game between Margaret Peña and Peter Dyke. Peter established a good lead, but missed a hampered rush after running penult with his second ball. This let Margaret in and she went to the peg and pegged out Peter's forward ball. Peter had a few long shots, before Margaret ran the last three hoops to win the game by two points!
