August Weekend Handicap Singles Tournament
There were 16 competitors including visitors from Northampton, High Wycombe, Truro, Southwell, Salisbury and Wellington as well as local players from Bath, Bristol and Nailsea.
The lawns were flooded on the Friday evening, however, by Saturday morning, the water had drained away and play was able to proceed.
The format of the event was a Hand’s Ladder (Egyptian), which meant that players could play as many games as they could fit in over the weekend. Each player starts with a rating of 50 and wins or loses from one to seven points depending on the difference in ratings between the players.
EUGENE CHANG, a sixteen-year-old from Bath, playing in his first tournament, won his first three games quickly and convincingly and the manager was unable to find him a fourth opponent on Saturday evening, so he took him on himself! PETER managed to give him his closest game of the weekend, but attempting a double peel, missed a long return roquet after 1-back and lost by 7 points.EUGENE finished the first day top of the leader board with four wins out of four and a rating of 64.
RICHARD JELLY, another new player from Bath, was lying in second place with three wins out of three and a rating of 62 while MARY BARNES (Nailsea) also with three wins was lying third with a rating of 59.
On Sunday morning EUGENE dispatched defending champion, IAN WILSON, formerly Nailsea Secretary, now living in Cornwall, +26 in a record 45 minutes.
Meanwhile, MARY beat RICHARD to take her to second place. MARY's next game, lasted the full 3¼ hour time limit plus a break for lunch, MARY eventually winning the marathon by one point on time! EUGENE then played MARY with EUGENE the victor by 18 points to finish in first place.
Meanwhile PAT LONG, eighth place overnight, finished with three wins on Sunday to take second place, with MARY in third place, just one point behind.
KATHY WALLACE (Nailsea) had two wins on Sunday to take her from 12th place overnight up to 5th.
GRETA STRINGER (Nailsea) finished 9th with 3 wins and 3 losses.
MARY and KATHY both gained Bronze Awards for completing ten hoops with bisques and EUGENE would have gained both Bronze and Silver Awards if he had been a member of the Croquet Association.
EUGENE and MARY both gained handicap reductions from 14 to 12.
