Federation League: Nailsea 4   Bristol 3

On Sunday Nailsea played its first league match of the season, a local derby against Bristol.

Last year Bristol beat Nailsea 4-3 and this year’s match was equally close with the outcome undecided until the final turn of the match.

The teams were GRETA STRINGER (captain), PETER DYKE, DAVID MURPHY and GEOFF HUGHES for Nailsea and ROGER JENKINS (captain), MARIAN HILTON, BOB SCOTT and JILL HATHAWAY for Bristol.

In the morning GRETA and GEOFF won the doubles, but in the singles MARIAN beat DAVID and BOB came back from a 16-point deficit to beat PETER by one point on time.

At lunch Bristol had a 2-1 lead, so Nailsea needed to win three of the four afternoon singles.

They started well with wins by GRETA and GEOFF, but DAVID lost to the Bristol captain so the result depended on the last game to finish.

PETER saw an early eleven-point lead whittled away by his opponent, MARIAN. In her final turn she made a mini-break to draw level, but blobbed the penultimate hoop using PETER’s black ball, which was for the same hoop in the opposite direction. He hit in and scored the hoop to win the game and went on to finish his turn with a seven-hoop three-ball break and pegged out to win by nine points.
