August Handicap Weekend Singles Tournament (annual event)
There were 16 competitors from around the country.
The event was run as a Hands Ladder, in which each competitor starts with an index of 50 and gains points for a win and loses points for a loss. The advantage of this format is that competitors can play as many or as few games as they wish. The person with the highest index at the end of two days play was the winner.
Tony Hudson from Chester was the overnight leader with three wins out of three and an index of 61 points.
Nigel Grant ( Cornwall), and Geoff Hughes and Greta Stringer, both from Nailsea, each with two wins and no losses and indices of 58, 58 and 57 respectively, followed closely.
On Sunday morning defending champion, Chris Donovan (High Wycombe) beat Owen Bryce ( Northampton) by 26 points in 1 hour 4 minutes and they both had a long wait for the next game to finish. Geoff beat Tony to take the lead with 62 points and Greta beat Nigel to increase her rating to 61.
In a very close game in the afternoon, Geoff beat Greta by one point on time to increase his rating to 66 and win the tournament. Derek Stoaling ( Bath), 54 overnight, won both his games on Sunday to increase his index to 62 and take second place, while Tony Hudson won his final game to finish in third place with an index of 61. Greta slipped back to 57 and came 5th behind Deirdre Duggan ( Bristol) on 58 points.
Eugene Chang ( Bath) had a handicap change from 4 to 3½ and Greta improved hers from 4½ to 4.
Geoff Hughes, playing in his first Croquet Association tournament, gained his silver award, for scoring 12 points in a turn without bisques.
Brigit Clayton won a bronze award for gaining 10 points in one turn with bisques (extra turns given in handicap play).
