SWF Intermediate League Final
On Sunday Nailsea Croquet Club hosted the Intermediate League Final between Nailsea and Plymouth.
In the morning singles game play was fairly even for the first forty minutes, then Kathy Wallace did an 8-hoop break. Her opponent clawed his way back into the game, but Kathy hung onto her lead to win by one point on time.
The doubles was also very close in the early stages. A six-hoop break by Alan Schaffert gave Plymouth the lead. Mary Barnes replied with a five-hoop break, but Plymouth managed to hang onto their lead to win by four on time.
In the afternoon Kathy got off to a flying start, scoring 11 hoops with one bisque (extra turn in handicap play) in 20 minutes and 7 hoops with her remaining 3 bisques. She kept the initiative and after two hours play had scored 23 points while her opponent had scored only 11. The Plymouth player scored 7 more points before Kathy scored the last hoop, but she missed the peg-out and pegged out one ball. Her opponent hit in, but was unable to catch up and Kathy won by 7 on time.
In her singles game Mary Barnes scored 7 hoops with one bisque to gain the lead, but her opponent clawed his way back into the game and took a narrow lead. In his last turn the Plymouth player missed a 3-yard shot. Mary scored one more point to level the scores, but overran her approach shot to hoop 6 so she lay up in front of the hoop. As the scores were level play continued until the next point was scored. The Plymouth player hit a 20-yard shot and scored the golden hoop to win by one on time.
With the score at 2-all everything now depended on the remaining singles game. Richard Delmas had got off to a good start scoring 8 hoops with 2 bisques. Alan Schaffert replied with a 7-hoop break. Starting at hoop 2 Richard scored 5 points using his last bisque, but failed to get position in front of the seventh hoop. With just four turns each left Richard was still 8 points ahead when he had a long shot at his opponent’s blue ball, missed and finished on the boundary one yard from the black ball. At the time black was still for hoop one and Alan scored 3 hoops, but failed to get position in front of hoop 4. Richard shot and missed and Alan was able to continue the break for another four hoops before missing a 3-yard shot. Richard tried to score one more hoop with his forward ball, but it bounced off the hoop towards Alan’s hoop. Alan took his time over his last shot, a long shot at yellow but he missed and Richard won by one point on time to win the match for Nailsea by 3 games to 2.
