B League Club Challenge

On Sunday Nailsea Croquet Club’s two B League teams played each other. One team, captained by Brian McCausland, was made up of players who started playing in the last two year’s whereas the other team, captained by Linda Shaw, consisted of players who had been members of the Club for more than two years.

In the morning singles wins by Jim Gregory by 13 and Harry Wallace by 5 on time gave Linda’s team a 2-1 lead at lunch, David Hunt and Rob Royffe winning the doubles by 5 on time for Brian’s team.

The afternoon games were very close. David Jones, Brian McCausland and Rob Royffe won by margins of 10, 3 and 4 respectively.

However, the most exciting game was between Linda Shaw and David Hunt. After two hours play the score was 14-all, then a break by David took him ahead and towards the end of the game a break by Linda brought her back into the game. In her last turn she took a one-point lead, but failed the final hoop. David hit in and scored the last two hoops to win by one point.

As a result the Brian’s team had a clean sweep of the afternoon games and won the match by five games to two.

Both teams demonstrated how much they had improved during the season and should be commended on a most enjoyable match.
