End of Season Report

Nailsea Croquet Club Handicap Doubles Competition

Nailsea Croquet Club’s competitions were completed last week. In the handicap doubles competition there was a three-way tie on wins between Mary Barnes & Jim Gregory, Geoff Hughes & Violet Delmas and Peter Dyke & Richard Delmas each pair having two wins. However Mary & Jim had by far the highest points score with a total of +23 points, whereas the other two pairs each had a net total of +1 point. So Mary & Jim were the winners and Geoff & Violet were runners-up under the “who beat whom rule” as they had beaten Peter & Richard.

Nailsea Croquet Club Beginners Competition

The finalists in this year’s Beginners Competition were Bill Lane and Mark Rowland.

They both tried hard to set up breaks using their bisques, Mark running 5 hoops with them and Bill 10. After the bisques were spent, Bill made steady progress round the lawn and included an impressive 3-hoop break, using only 3 balls. At this stage, Mark was struggling in the difficult conditions. However, as the time limit was approaching, he made a splendid rally and it was his turn to complete a 3-hoop break.

After an entertaining match of high standard, Bill pegged out with seconds to spare and took the Neurologica Shield with a score of 26-13.

Positions in South West Federation Leagues

This brings the Club to the end of another successful season. This year the Club entered five teams in four South West Federation Leagues. They came third in the Advanced League (Second Division) and fourth in the Federation League. The Club entered two teams in the B League. One team, made up entirely of Beginners since 2002, came second in the South West Section and the other team came third in the Central Section. The most outstanding team result, however, was that of Mary Barnes, Kathy Wallace and Richard Delmas who narrowly won the Final of the Intermediate League against old rivals Plymouth. Mention should also be made of Bernard Wilson, Violet Delmas and Brigit Clayton who had played for the team during the season and helped them reach the final.

Individual Successes

The Club’s most outstanding individual success of the season was that of Marcus Evans who came 17 th in the World Golf Croquet Championships. He was also runner-up in the Golf Croquet All England Handicap Championship and, partnered by Peter Dyke, reached the final six in the National Golf Croquet Doubles Championship. Peter also reached the final sixteen in the Association Croquet All England Handicap Championship and the final eight in the National Golf Croquet Singles Championships. Bernard Wilson won Nailsea Croquet Club’s May Handicap Tournament beating Peter Dyke in the final, Geoff Hughes won the Club’s August Handicap Tournament, Richard Delmas won Pendle Croquet Club’s August Handicap Tournament and Linda Shaw won a triangular tournament for high handicap players from Nailsea, Weston-super-Mare and Palace (Wells) Croquet Clubs.
